Epic vs apple outcome11/21/2023 Apple misuse their position as owner of the ecosystem to undercut the competition in markets they compete in like music streaming. Like, the Spotify case is a good example. It largely feels like a case that should have been (and in some places is being) brought forward by a different company. If you're arguing a practice is inherently bad, why is it only bad in some places? They tried to argue "yeah but the consoles are different" but never really put any good reasons as to why they're different. Like Apple's 30% cut doesn't hurt Epic at all, because they also pay it on other stores and are completely fine with doing so. It feels like they're attempting to co-opt arguments that definitely can and should be made by companies that are actually impacted by them. In general though, I just think Epic's arguments are pretty bad? Outside of the reprecussions on what would happen if they win, their core argument is just not very good. It'd potentially be pretty devastating for small developers, definitely at least only beneficial to big ones. They're both big evil corporations, but as a small mobile dev the potential of Epic winning this is worrying. It's happened via emails.Ĭonsumers having the ability to unlock a door is not going to impact your experience if you keep that door closed. Epic isn't going to be able to compete with the sheer interconnectivity of Google services or Apple services, especially with payment methods.Īnyone trying to follow in Epic's footsteps would have the same exact issues on iOS - once again, except for Cydia since their stuff has been in place for longer than Apple's on iOS, though they might run into scalability issues if that segment grew substantually without the need for a jailbreak - so the fears of malware are overblown.Īnd it's not like malware can't get into play via Apple's store anyway it's happened in the past. Google has the account connectivity to the store and email for receipts, it has the account connectivity to the store and the payment method, as well as in app purchases. Not to mention, even with these options, including the Galaxy Store, Amazon Store, or whatever other app stores there are (outside of China), the vast vast majority of apps still go through Google. XDA's shitty app store isn't out and spreading malware. Make it some buried setting that comes up once during the initial phone setup and requires you to go to Settings>About Phone>tap on this long ass serial number 20 times like you need to do in order to unlock developer options on Android if you need to, but either way, it's not going to impact your closed loop.Ĭlick to shrink. That's the fault of Epic, not the fault of Android functionality. ![]() ![]() I shouldn't have to Jailbreak an iPhone to go to to download an Epic app store that won't have anything of merit anyway because Epic lacks the connective tissue to make such a thing worthwhile past Fortnite. Once again, I shouldn't have to Jailbreak an iPhone to get Jailbreak features. Me having the option of making something complicated isn't going to prevent you from keeping things simple. And someone who exclusively downloads from the App Store on macOS isn't going to start suddenly calling you at 3am over some shit. ![]() After all, what I'm really asking for is for iOS to be as open as macOS. Providing someone the opportunity to open up some more features is not going to disadvantage you or your locked in setup.
